I use @wire for reading data reactively: it provisions data when the component loads and re-runs when reactive parameters change, and it benefits from client-side caching when the Apex method is cacheable. Lightning Data Service wire adapters like getRecord avoid Apex altogether for simple record access.

I call Apex imperatively when I need to control timing, such as on a button click, or when performing DML, because methods used with @wire must be cacheable and read-only.

What interviewers look for

The interviewer checks understanding of reactivity, caching and the cacheable=true requirement. Strong answers mention refreshApex or notifying record updates after changes. A pitfall is always using Apex when Lightning Data Service would suffice.
