I start by defining scope: which objects and how much history to migrate, agreed with the business. Then I profile and cleanse the source data, create field mappings and transformation rules, and decide on External IDs for relationships and reruns.

I run trial migrations in a full sandbox, reconcile record counts and spot-check data with business users, and plan the cutover including freeze periods, automation deactivation and load order. After go-live I validate, re-enable automation and archive the legacy system according to retention policy.

What interviewers look for

Look for scope, data quality, mapping, trial loads, reconciliation and a cutover plan. Strong answers involve business owners in validation. A pitfall is treating migration as a technical afterthought scheduled for the last week.
